About Us
The Margery Kempe Trust is a charitable organisation dedicated to promoting life writing and storytelling in King's Lynn. Inspired by the legacy of Margery Kempe, a 15th-century mystic and author who wrote the first autobiography in the English language, we aim to promote King's Lynn's unique literary heritage as the birthplace of English life writing. We strive to provide a platform to celebrate and amplify the diverse voices of King's Lynn and beyond, and to create a space where everyone feels welcome to discover, craft, and share their unique story.

Our organisation champions the transformative power of all forms of life writing and storytelling – from memoir to oral history to TikTok – to promote creativity and wellbeing, and build stronger, more vibrant, and inclusive communities in King's Lynn and beyond.
Life writing encompasses more than just the written word. Inspired by Margery Kempe herself, who was illiterate but fought against all odds to share her story, we believe that everyone has a story to tell, regardless of their written abilities. We are dedicated to providing a platform for diverse forms of expression, including social media, oral storytelling, rap and grime, podcasting, songwriting, filmmaking, and multimedia content creation, ensuring that everyone in King's Lynn can participate and contribute to a vibrant culture of shared experiences.
