The story of TMKT

The Margery Kempe Trust derives its name from a groundbreaking figure in literary history who embodies the core values of our organisation. Margery Kempe, a 15th-century mystic, pilgrim, and author from then Bishop’s Lynn, defied societal norms to write the first autobiography in the English language — despite being illiterate. Her story exemplifies the transformative potential of storytelling, the importance of individual voices, and the power of empathy to drive human connection

King’s Lynn holds a unique place in literary history as the birthplace of English life writing, thanks to Margery Kempe. The Book of Margery Kempe is a one-of-a-kind glimpse into the life and times of a mediaeval woman, her spiritual journey, and her experiences in a society that often marginalised women's voices. It's also considered one of the most interesting literary discoveries of the 20th century.

The Margery Kempe Trust wants to promote King's Lynn’s unique literary heritage as the birthplace of English life writing. We plan to establish a Centre for Life Writing and Storytelling in King’s Lynn that will offer a range of cultural programmes and activities that empower people and communities to discover, craft and share their own stories

Kempe's legacy reminds us that everyone has a story to tell if given the opportunity and encouragement. Her empathy, resilience, and determination to tell her story resonate with our mission to empower people from all walks of life to share their own stories, fostering connection, understanding, and a sense of belonging within the King's Lynn community. Like Kempe, we believe everyone has a story worth sharing.

The Margery Kempe Trust is dedicated to providing a platform to celebrate the diverse voices of King's Lynn and beyond, and creating a space where everyone feels welcome to discover, craft and share their unique story.
